Top Tips for Keeping Pets Safe and Healthy in Autumn

Top Tips for Keeping Pets Safe and Healthy in Autumn

With autumn just around the corner, we’re looking forward to some cosy days inside with our favourite cuddly companions. However, with a change in season brings a change in our pets needs, so we’ve gathered our top tips to help keep them healthy and safe this autumn.

Darker Evenings

As the dark nights draw in, there’s a number of extra things we need to consider. As you head out for a walk, making sure you and your dog are seen is essential, we’d recommend ourReflective Exercise Lead and Harness. Designed to keep your dog's safety and comfort a priority, the reflective material allows your dog to be more visible in dark conditions.

When it comes to our feline friends, try keeping them inside during the darker evenings. Providing home entertainment like our Swat and Play Quiet Mat will keep them busy whilst inside, or try our Luxury Cat Tunnel Radiator Bed for cosying up on those colder nights. If you’re happy to let them out, cats will try to seek out any warm space they can find, which sometimes means under car bonnets. Make sure to give the car horn a beep before getting into your vehicle and give them time to leave the area, just in case.

Always remember to keep a torch at the ready too, to check on any small pets who may be living in outdoor enclosures.

Adjusting Your Pet’s Diet & Maintaining Your Pet’s Weight

It’s a fact that the amount of exercise our pets get decreases as we head into the colder months, which can lead to weight gain. As outdoor activity becomes less frequent, try adapting your pets diet and encouraging more play indoors.

When it comes to meal times, we’d recommend our Silicone Slow Feeder Double Diner which slows down your dog's eating and helps them to maintain a healthy weight. However our cats and dogs are prone to comfort eating when it’s colder, so you can still treat them to some healthier snacks. Our extra tasty Natural Eats Superfoods Duck & Goji Berry treats for dogs have no added sugar or salt, with our Daily Eats Crunchy Chicken Cushions making the perfect vitamin enriched treat for your cat.

Keeping Our Small Animals Safe

With the unpredictable weather in the UK continuing all year round, when kept outside our small animals, like guinea pigs and rabbits, can become vulnerable in extreme weather. Make sure any enclosures are in a sheltered position and consider adding extra protection in the form of plastic sheeting or similar to reduce any exposure to rain or strong winds. Builders’ Visqueen or even shower curtains can be ideal. Just make sure they are adequately secured and cannot be nibbled!

OurToy Pop-Up Tent makes the perfect shelter from the elements, with a soft fleece pad for added comfort. Or if you’re able to keep them safely inside, ourCarrot Plush Hooded Bed makes the ideal cosy spot for a snooze.
